Porto

Portugal's second city, or if you ask any local its the first! Like any country the first (Lisbon) and second city (Porto) are great rivals, and when it comes to surfing Porto is a real contender for the title of best surfing capital in Europe.

Porto has enjoyed a mini renaissance in recent years. Its fantastic restaurant and bar scene has rejuvenated the city. It is less built up than its Southern counterparts and surrounded by green hills with long stretches of beaches both North and South of the city.

Due to the myth of it not being as sunny as down south a surfing holiday in Porto is not always the first choice. With summer temperatures of 28 degrees, and empty set ups it should be first on your list.

Porto or Oporto as it is called by the Portuguese is a Unesco heritage town and one of the oldest cities in Europe. The river Duoro splits the city and can be crossed by the magnificent Dona Maria Bridge , designed by Gustave Eiffel. The main old town is a mix of narrow cobblestone streets, colourful tiled old houses, delightful plazas and the charismatic medieval quarter. Its charm is its run down building, unchanged by time and mass tourism, go for a little wander and pretty soon you will only see locals and feel like one yourself!

Restaurants & Bars

As you might have guessed this is the city that named Port Wine so make sure you take a wine tour and sample the local flavour. Stroll along the Ribeira bank and have dinner in one of the world class restaurants for a treat. Otherwise head to the Foz district where most of the popular bars and restaurants are.

Surrounding towns

Espinho and Esmoriz are two nearby towns south of Porto that have become mini suburbs of Porto and have developed a great surf culture. Many people find themselves staying here rather than Porto. Great small town vibe and close to the action of the city.

If you have the time a tour along the river Douro is recommended. It is the most famous wine region of Portugal and has some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world, no exaggeration.
The city is only a 10km from Porto airport (Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport), so a quick weekend surf trip is a great option if you don't have a full week. You can also fly to Lisbon also, but it is 3 hours away so not ideal.

Flights to Porto

Please note to check airports as new routes & airlines may begin operating at any time. Below are just some that fly to Portugal. www.wegolo.com is a website that lets you know who flies where from different cities. www.aerlingus.com www.flytap.com www.ryanair.com www.britishairways.com www.flymonarch.com www.easyjet.com

How to get to Porto centre from Porto Airport:

Shared transfers - Share a taxi or mini bus with our shuttle bus partner here

Bus & Metro - Easy access from the airport straight into the city centre. Both take 35 minutes approximately.

Taxi - From Porto airport to the centre. Approximate time 25 minutes. Cost €40.

Car Hire - We have a discount car hire section on our website where you can rent a car. Rent your car from the airport and drive.
The best time to surf Porto is between Spring through to Autumn. It's main surf beach is Matosinhos beach, the best surf spot in Porto for beginner and intermediates. Its a long 1km sandy beach with a few different points on it. The set up is a mix of beach break and reef break and parts of it are sheltered so it handles larger swell. Easy to get to and consistent.

Next to Matosinhos is International Beach. A lovely spot that begins where the city park ends. Its also a great learner spot, and a great place to hang out both during day and at night. Further north is Leca, a very consistent beach break protected by the harbour.

In and around the city there are small little beaches all worth exploring, particularly for the more advanced surfers wanting to discover the best Porto surf breaks.

There are more surf breaks further south including Barra do Porto and Miramar and then 20km south of Porto are the towns of Esphino and Esmoriz. Its arguably the North's most famous surf area and the beaches have a real nice surf culture. The area's 3 main beaches are Silvade, beach, Blue beach and Baia beach. A mix of sandy beach breaks and reef spots that suit beginner and advanced. Hang around and score some long barreling right & left handers all to yourself.
