Pumula Surf House
Reviews (5)
5 out of 5

A beautiful Surf House, with stunning views, a short walk away (no roads to cross) is our uncrowded beach, Predominantly a right hand point break, our weather is sub tropical, sunshine, warm water and waves all year. Our head coach and owner is a South African, pro surfer. We offer Surf Lessons & Surf guides, learn to surf or progress to the next level. We have a variety of beaches all within 5 min. Right hand point breaks, beach breaks and a few left hand points too. We are the longest running surf school in our area, & the only local owned and run, established 2009. We have stunning uncrowded beaches, great surf, great diving spots, lots of adventure sports close by and amazing hikes. We also do yoga sessions on our stunning deck overlooking the forest, listen to the birds chirping and the river running while you stretch, breathe and inhale the fresh seaside air. The Surf House sleeps 10, has a pool and ocean views, lots of outside space to chill, watch the waves, the whales and the dolphins. We cater for all diets including vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and meat eaters. We make delicious pizza's in our wood fired oven. Come be a part of our family and experience our amazing lifestyle, of sun, surf and beach.

Location

Our surf house is situated in Pumula, which means "peaceful resting place" in isiZulu, one of our national languages. We are surrounded by indigenous bush and mangrove forests, see the fish eagles soar and hear them call, the bushbuck come grazing in our entrance, lots of stunning birds and wildlife.
The beach is a short stroll away, Pumula beach is great for fishing, surfing, diving, snorkeling and just chilling. It has stunning rock pools and abundant sea life. Pumula is a small seaside village in a great community. Check out the Nivonia shipwreck on Pumula Beach.
There are plenty of waves to choose from, waves for all levels.

How did you like the accommodation?

The accommodation is in a lovely cottage style home, the rooms are clean and cosy. The host family are just lovely, the vibe is awesome, the beaches are simply stunning, uncrowded and upspoilt, nice uncrowded line up. The food is simply delicious. This is my 3 stay at this awesome place, and I plan to come back again very soon.

How were the surf lessons?

I am an intermediate to advanced surfer. On my previous stay I took lessons, they were wicked, fun filled and we checked all the local spots until we found the best beach to surf at that particular time. These guys go out of their way to make sure you get waves. They are super knowledgeable of the local area. The beaches are stunning.

How did you like the accommodation?

The accommodation is very cool, we stayed in the family room with our 3 boys, the space was perfect for us. The house is so cosy and feels like a home, the garden is huge and our boys had lots of fun running around and playing with the hosts, Hayley and Justin's 2 girls. The beach is a 300m walk and its perfect for families, lovely rock pools with tons of sealife, the waves come in and the kids can play while you relax. The beach is very uncrowded and really is paradise, and the water is very warm.

How were the surf lessons?

We all took surf lessons and they were awesome, Justin was super patient with the kids and they loved it. My husband and I both took lessons and we really progressed. We can't wait to come back and visit again. The beaches are beautiful.

How did you like the accommodation?

I stayed in the rustic bush shed, a lovely, private shed in the garden. It was light and airy and very comfortable. I then moved into the main house for my last week of surf camp. I stayed in the Twin room and it was great, light and airy and clean. There is a cleaning lady everyday. The town is lovely, small seaside village, there is a shop you can walk to with basic stuff, like bread, a few veg and they make lovely chips and toasties, but the breakfasts and dinners at the surf camp are amazing, you should order those. There is no restaurants in the area, so if you like, hire a car, but there is also a local taxi lady that we used a lot and she is very friendly and affordable.

How were the surf lessons?

I had never been to a surf camp before and it was my first time surfing. The instructors were awesome, very patient with me and really helped me a lot. In the beginning of my stay I was just in the white water foam but by the end of my 2 week stay i was going into the mid break and then one day even to the outside. I loved the lessons, the beaches and everything about this place. Was my best holiday ever, and I hope to return very soon.

How did you like the accommodation?

The accommodation was very cool, very surf, beach vibe. I stayed in the twin room, it was very nice, with garden views. The village is super chilled, very close to the beach, and also with amazing natural forest views. No restaurants, but with the delicious food served at the camp you really don't need anything else. You can also cook for yourself in the shard kitchen which is fully equipped. There is a small shop you can walk to. There is also a local taxi service if you need to go anywhere else.

How were the surf lessons?

I am an intermediate surfer and I learned so much. My surfing progressed in just 3 days. These guys are local and know the beaches and the waves so well. They gave me great tips. I got to surf beautiful beaches with great instructors and I even got to see Dolphins in the ocean, amazing sunrise surf sessions too and the surf camp even arranged breakfast on the beach. We also had a beach bonfire the one evening. They will also organize tours to some very cool place if you like.

How did you like the accommodation?

I stayed in the 4 bed dorm room with 3 of my friends, we are germans studying in South Africa. The Surf House is very cool, nice and chilled, with lovely views from the deck and outside chill area, the beach is a short walk away. There is also a small shop you can walk to, and the village has some cool walks.

How were the surf lessons?

The surf lessons were so cool, 2 of my friends had never surfed before and they were quite nervous, but the instructors put them at ease and they were great. I progressed quite a lot and went from surfing foamies to going out to the back, on the smaller more manageable days. So much fun. Breakfasts are nice and we even had breakfast on the beach some days. The host, Hayley took some nice pictures of us surfing and they give you these for free which is a nice touch.
