Padang Padang
Level: Advanced
Padang Padang is known as the balinese pipeline as it is very similar to Hawaaii's very own pipeline. It is a very fast long barrelling wave that lives up to it's reputation as the most serious wave in bali. The waves come in fast out of deep water and breaks over a shallow coral reef which makes the wave barrel (tube). Expert surfers only.
Padang Padang Rights
Level: All Levels
Padang Padang rights is also known as baby Padang. It is located the other side of the channel to the world famous Padang Padang but this is a soft mellow break due to the shape of the reef. It breaks both left and right. The left is a long ride and can be ridden almost all the way to impossibles while the right is a shorter ride that takes you back to the channel for an easy paddle back to the line up. This is the spot where the local kids learn to surf. Perfect for your first green waves. This is the go to spot for beginner and intermediate surfers. If you are on a short vacation and want to get the most out of your surfing time then we recommend private surf lessons.
Impossibles
Level: Advanced
Impossibles is a fast racy wave that is very picturesque. There are 3 seperate peaks on this wide reef which breaks up the crowds. On the right conditions with a good size swell and offshore wind it is possible for the sections to link up and to get a ride of a mile or more to the warungs at bingin. Due to how quickly this wave breaks it is almost explicitly for advanced surfers but can be good for intermediates on smaller days.
Bingin
Level: Advanced
Bingin is a perfect machine wave that works best around mid tide. It is a very consistent wave and throws out many perfect barrels. If you want to practice barrel riding lefts to bingin could be the perfect location. At low tide it can be very shallow and for expert surfers only. At high tide the wave can break very soft and is where the bali children learn to surf. High tide can be perfect for intermediate surfers on a small day, but mostly only suitable for advanced surfers and due to the highly localised nature of the spot, best to go with a local surf guide.
Dreamland
Level: All Levels
Dreamland is a beautiful white sand beach a short walk from Impossibles & Bingin. There are many different breaks that work at different satges of the tide and is suitable for novice surfers as it breaks over sand. The best wave is an A frame peak that works best at low tide on a big swell. There is also a punchy shorebreak wave where you will see balinese and visitng surfers exhibiting their skills at the water's edge. Dreamland is a perfect location to spend the day surfing, sunbathing and handing out in the local warungs. On small days Dreamland is suitable for beginner surfers but it is a particular favourite of intermediate surfers as there are a variety of spots that work on different tides and swell sizes. On bigger days the A frame can be phenomenal and is only suitable for advanced surfers.
Balangan
Level: All Levels
Balangan is the next break on the bukit and is waking distance from dreamland. It is a reef break but has a beautiful white sand beach which is very quiet and beautiful. Balangan is still relatively undeveloped and retains that old bali charm. Balangan is a fun left hander that can break quite fast so wave selection and positioning is key here. Very popular with intermediate surfers but also suitable for beginner surfers on the smaller days. Balangan can be ridden at any tide but low tide is a bit challenging for novices and so is usually best on mid to high tide.
Uluwatu
Level: All Levels
Uluwatu is the indicator break for the west side of the bukit and is very consistent. Picks up any swell and never flat. The wide reef offers many different peaks which all turn on at different tide stages. The Peak is immediately in front of you as you paddle out of the cave and is a consistent wave that works at all tide stages but is best from mid to high tide. Outside corners only breaks at low tide on the biggest swells and is a classic wave. This is the go to big wave riding spot when the swell is big enough. Racetrack is a fast racy wave that works best at low to mid tide. Fast racy and so much fun. The best waves are growers, start at shoulder high and get bigger and bigger. The end section throws a great barrel but be careful as rather shallow and many flesh eating hungry crabs waiting for a taste of you skin Temples is a bit of a paddle from the main peak so tends to be less busy and works best at mid to high tide. The bombie will break on the biggest swells and is rideable at up to 30 foot or even bigger! Our surf guides are experts at this break and many have grown up surfing Uluwatu and have participated in several local invitational competitions. In general Uluwatu is best suited for the advanced surfers, but conditions are commonly appropriate for intermediate surfers.
Greenbowls
Level: Intermediate
Greenbowls, also sometimes called Greenballs, picks up any swell direction but is very exposed to the trade winds. You need to pick your time carefully to go here when it's not too big and not blown out. Breaks mostly right into a channel but also can pick up a few lefts. Beware of the strong sweeping current and make sure you save some energy for the huge climb back to the top. If you are very tired there is a 75 year old woman who will carry your board up for a small fee. Popular with intermediate surfers, Greenbowls picks up a lot of swell and on the bigger days is only suitable for advanced surfers.
Toro Toro
Level: All Levels
Toro Toro is a surf camp favourite. Highlight of a stay with Padang Padang Surf Camp is to take the fun boat to Toro Toro. Very easy wave and the right can peel for incredibly long distance. At high tide there is a left hander that can be fun but is a short ride breaking into a deep water channel. Toro Toro is an easy wave and perfect for intermediate surfers. When the swell gets bigger the inside section can be fun and for beginner surfers the tower can be perfect.
Jimbaran
Level: Beginner
Jimbaran is a good spot for learners on the right swell conditions. A sheltered bay with soft sand the waves break softly and can be the perfect spot for your first ever surf as unlike many other breaks in Bali, it is just a short paddle to the line up. On big sells Jimbaran beach is perfect for beginner surfers
Bali benefits from an almost endless supply of Southern Ocean groundswell meaning you are very rarely disappointed. SW swells wrap around the Bukit peninsula creating an array of world class lefts including the infamous Uluwatu which is Bali's most consistent wave. It is for the more experienced surfers and it tends to section when it's smaller which does spread the crowds out by allowing take offs almost anywhere down the line. The wave is broken down into three sections, Inside corner, Racetracks and Outside corner.
Further down the Bukit peninsula you can find Padang Padang which is home to Bali's most desired barrel and a more chilled out Bali surf holidays place to stay than the busier Kuta. It is a beautiful white sandy beach with reef out back for the more advanced, while in front it is perfect for beginners.
Bingin reef is a fun short tube wave, that can get crowded.
Dreamland beach is next in line and is one of the more user friendly beaches on the Bukit. It runs from deep water and can often be a shore break where you need to avoid creasing your board or hitting one of the many tourists playing on the inside.
Balangan is slightly more secluded with another perfect looking left point. It fires when the swell direction is big enough and coming from the right direction.
For beginners & intermediates there are many quality beach breaks around including the long beach break in the centre of Kuta and up to Legian. Further north west is Canggu which has a better mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced waves than the high performance waves on the Bukit Peninusla.
On the east side of the island you can find Nusa Dua, Sanur & further up Keramus. This side of Bali tends to work better in the Wet season (October to April).
Across from the Bali Peninsula is Grajagan or G-Land. A much more remote spot than the rest of Bali, surrounded by thick jungle and wild animals. It is often referred to as the best wave in the world. A long very consistent wave with a variety of different sections. but mostly for experienced surfers.
