Praia da Luz (or simply Luz) is a charming and peaceful old fisherman's village that makes for a great holiday destination for those visitors wanting a relaxing stay in a low key and traditional place. Luz is situated on the western side of the Algarve, close to the historic city of Lagos, and is blessed with both a beautiful beach and glorious climate. Luz is pretty, unassuming and has a wonderful beach. The town has a homely and welcoming ambience; where visitors and long to term residents can spend the hot summer days in the beachside cafes and restaurants chatting and socialising or go hiking in the cliffs near by. Luz can be an alternative base from which to explore the western Algarve region, there are good public transport links to the historic city of Lagos, while there are sufficient buses to explore the west, towards Sagres.
The surf camp is located in Vila da Luz right next to the city of Lagos in the Algarve.
Everything is within walking distance, 2 minutes to the beach, 2 minutes to the nearest bars and restaurants and 5 minutes to the supermarket and pharmacy.
The villa has two floors and allows a maximum occupation of 8 people. Downstairs there are three bedrooms, two of them with a bunkbed, and two bathrooms. There is also a toilet upstairs.
There is free wi-fi in all the house and cable-tv in the spacious living room.
Outside there are several balconies with hammocks and puffs where you can relax after a surfing day, or just chill out with a nice bottle of Portuguese wine.

Accommodation is clean and tidy and food is good.
The town is ok, a few good restaurants and is positioned half way between the west coast & Portimao. 30 mins in both directions. Not much surf at the nearest beach to the hostel.
A good place to stay.
As a beginner the lessons were good.
Nothing but good things to say. If you are looking for wave riders, here you must come. If you are looking to meet wonderful people, here you must be. If you are a sun-chaser, land at Jho'la.
Perfect ambiences and great host.
They were attentive, knew the tides and helped as much as possible. Beginners will be amazed by the amount of help.

Being very close to the south corner of Europe (Sagres) we have one the best geographic location because there are always waves somewhere, either in the West coast or the South coast depending on the sea conditions.
Main Surf Beach: Amado
Beginner Surf Lessons
Our surf lessons include wetsuit, surfboard, leash and pick-up. The instructor will pick you up at the surf camp and take you to the beach, were you will have two sessions, for approximately 1h30min each where you'll be taught the basics of surfing. You will always be at waist deep water and there will always be one instructor for a maximum of 8 people.
Intermediate Surf Lessons
The surf van will pick you up at the surf camp and take you to the beach with the best conditions. Each day includes 3h of surfing possibly divided by 2 sessions of 1h30min each. All the surf equipment is included (wetsuit, surfboard and leach).
You will learn about the weather, how waves are formed and all the necessary technics to get you on green wave.
Private Surf Lessons
During the private lesson, you will have a instructor all for yourself. The surfboard, wetsuit and leash are included and is lasts about 1h30min.
Surf Lessons often occur at the areas best and most reliable surf beaches, Praia do Amado and Praia do Amoreira, 20-30 minutes from Lagos. Depending on conditions you may surf at any number of surf beaches nearby such as Maia Praia, Castalejo, Arrifana, Zavial, Cabanas and Porto de Mos. Either way the surf schools will pick you up and take you to the best beaches on the day.
Don't worry if you have no experience whatsoever. The beginner's lessons are taught in waist deep water riding the white water only. You will learn everything from standing techniques to turning and finally paddling outside and learning how to catch ‘green' (unbroken) waves. If you are already experienced the instructors will take you further out and help you develop your technique on bigger waves.
Lagos is a year round surf destination thanks to its position at the corner of the Algarve. It is one of Europe’s best kept secrets and offers waves for beginners, intermediates and expert surfers. It also has the warmest water in Portugal and the winter temperature is warm enough for t-shirts. In the summer the temperature is in the late 20s and stay bright until 10pm.
Within Lagos is the town's long golden sandy beach that seems to go on forever, Meia Praia, a very safe beginners surf beach, but not always reliable.
Further Afield
Head further West and after 20 minutes you arrive at a crossroad, take the turn South West and after a few minutes you reach the laid back surf town of Sagres where you will find breaks such as Tonel, Mareta, Beliche and Zavial. Again different standards are catered for in these beaches that wrap around Cape St.Vincent
Alternatively take the right turn and after 10 minutes you will reach a great beginners /intermediate surf beach Praia do Amado. Close by is one of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches Praia da Bordeira. Further North is the world class surf break in Arrifana and beginners beach Amoreira. The UK's Independent newspaper sums it up best: "Here is one of Europe's undiscovered treasures - thankfully protected by a 120km-long Parque Natural, which helps ensure that "tourist development" mostly means a café in a shack on a beach. It all seems like a fabulous secret, shared only by the intrepid few who make it this far. Their reward? Having miles and miles of these dramatic beaches (almost) to themselves."
