As the Stormriders Surf Guide says “Donegal Bay is one of the few places in Europe to warrant the title ‘a surfer’s paradise"
Tullan Strand surf beach in Bundoran is one of the most consistent beginner's waves in the country. It is the perfect place to start, and is great for intermediates with a perfect wedge appearing off the cliff.
A few km's north is Rossnowlagh, said to be the first beach ever to be surfed in Ireland back in the 60s. It’s a perfect place for beginners and intermediate surfers to polish their skill. Don’t forget to have a drink in the legendary Surfers Bar before you leave!
In the centre of Bundoran town is The Peak, one of Ireland's best wave. Numerous World and European surfing competitions have been held here, it’s a perfect place to watch the locals rip it up.
40 minutes south of Bundoran, in Sligo, is the surf promenade at Strandhill, a very popular surf beach with surf shops and the famous Strand Bar.
For intermediates and advanced there are countless choices, it’s all about exploring and finding out for yourself. Mullaghmore head is Ireland’s premier big wave spot, made famous when local tow-in surfers caught 60 foot waves. Drive further west in Sligo and you will reach Easkey, home to Ireland’s most famous wave.

How were the surf lessons?
Our surf lessons were great and our instructor was great! I would definitely recommend surfing here to anyone we are looking to plan out next trip!
The waves weren't amazing but we still had lots of fun and most of us got to stand up on the boards a few times! And the instructors were great too. The weather was absolutely amazing up there that weekend so we really can't complain about the surf! On the Monday the waves were a lot bigger so got a bit of a taste for it!
Well, how to explain....surf was good teachers too and waves good. We like a lot this place. Beach is fantastic. My daughter had a great time on the waves and it's begin to be less difficult for me to stand up on the surf ! It was a very good experience to surf in Ireland where people are so welcoming and landscapes incredibles
The instructor (Brice) was terrific - rarely have I met someone so enthusiastic and dedicated. He gave us some extra instruction on body boarding which was a huge hit with both my son and myself. So I know what to get him for Christmas already! Neil was great also. He's a really pleasant guy, runs a nice outfit with a great ethos. The surf ? Being a newbie to all this - I wouldn't be able to comment except it was perfect for us - it certainly didn't scare us off !
I am glad to tell you, our staying at Fin Mccools was great. Neil and his crew are great. Always smiling. We met lots of people. Surf lessons were great, we had lots of fun with the waves.
Neil was great - nothing seemed a problem. 2nd day of lessons we were at first left a bit on the limb with the rest of the group from day 1 as didn't know who our instructor was until we were in the sea and saw 2 surf teachers with some kids. Once we asked them for help though, they were great. Can only say good things about the whole experience = a great place to learn. I do need a lot more practice, so will just have to come back! Love to one day, hopefully with not just my daughter = she enjoyed herself immensely too.
Neil and Stephanie made us all feel very welcome. The lessons were great and the Frenchman who took Jessica's lessons was very enthusiastic! We loved it so much, I would say there was a 90% chance of returning there within 12 months!
Surf was awesome, perfect beginner/intermediate beach. Owen was a great teacher and we all progressed really well under his guidence.
We all had a great time, unfortuneatly the surf was small but Neill took us to Bundoran where we got some waves. Everybody had a blast, and a few of us including myself are hooked, were already talking about our next surf trip. The area was real nice, the restaurants in particular were amazing, would recommend to anyone, especially if you like seafood.
