Weligama

Weligama town, another secluded oasis on Sri Lanka’s Southern Coast. This town is placed alongside endless stretches of white sandy beach that lend themselves perfectly to learning to surf, producing consistent waves at all times of the day over a sand bottom. The area has some great surf camps and surf holiday accommodation overlooking the beach.

This is the perfect spot to enjoy learning to surf and is the most consistent in the Southern Coast. It can still be surfed when the rest of the area is blown out.

The area West and East down to Weligama is surrounded by endless stretches of white sandy beach that lend themselves perfectly to learning to surf, producing consistent waves at all times of the day over a sand bottom.

Getting to the South coast surf area of Sri Lanka from the capital Colombo is relatively easy. You can also get a bus to Colombo centre from the airport and then a train on down to Weligama in 4 hours 30 minutes

Weligama is the main surf town along the Southern coast with all the great food options you’ll have come to love of Sri Lanka being on offer in cafés, bars & restaurants right on the beach.

This well developed town is an excellent introduction to the Sri Lankan coast as you can stock up on essentials and soak up the idyllic scenery here for a week or so before moving East or West to explore more surf beaches along the Sri Lanka coast.

How to get to Weligama from Colombo Airport

The South surf coastline of Weligama can all be reached by train or by car.

First fly into Sri Lanka's main airport, Colombo.

Please note to check airports as new routes & airlines may begin operating at any time.

Taxi's and mini buses: This is the easiest way and can be booked with our shuttle bus partner here. Private taxi will take 2hr30mins and cost approx €160 each way. Private mini bus will take 3hrs30mins and cost approx €80 each way.

Train - Take the Bus from Colombo (Bandaranaike) Airport to Colombo Fort. Buses leave every 15 minutes and cost €1. It takes 30 Minutes, You can also get a taxi for approx €10. From Colombo Fort take the train south, only costs €1. It takes 3hrs30mins and goes approx 10 times a day. Tickets cannot be bought online, timetable information can be found here: http://www.railway.gov.lk/. The train goes along the coast and has some amazing views.

Car Hire - We have a discount car hire section on our website where you can rent a car. Rent your car from the airport and drive South. The national Expressway goes all the way south. It will take you 3hrs30 minutes. You can also take the coast road which is an hour longer.
Weligama is a perfect beginner and intermediate surf break. It is arguable the most consistent beach break on the South Coast.

Only a quick 4KM and ten minutes by tuk-tuk from Weligama is the idyllic Mirissa. A quiet stretch of beach that has turquoise and crystal clear waters on beaches fringed by palms.

Mirissa is an established stop-off for surfers, with two breaks at either end of the beach. There is a right-hander reef break near the rocks that doesn’t generate much power, that is great for those who are progressing on to reef. And an equally good left-hander close to the harbour.
